Finally the Bighorn River looks like the Bighorn River should. Flows in the mid 3k range have fish settled back into their normal summer spots. There is a lot of grass growth that was hiding under the higher water and we are seeing more as the water drops. Look for those faster, gravel bottom areas and you will find fish. A bit less traffic than normal for this time of year, but that’s not a bad thing..
The Tricos have come back pretty strong. Expect a good number of duns on the water from about 6-6:30 and then the main spinner fall around 9 or so. Good numbers of fish are up until 11ish. After that it’s prospecting with the hopper/dropper rig, nymphing or chucking streamers. All of which are producing fish through the early afternoon.
We’re having good nymphing down the entire river right now. Worms and sowbugs dominate still as the main food source. The standard Wire Worm/Sowbug rig is about all you need right now. Our favorite sowbugs include: Pete’s Carpet bug, UV Eddie Vedder and SH Ray Charles. Any size from 14-20 will work right now.
