Bighorn River Reopens

Bighorn River Reopens

It’s official, the Bighorn River is up and running.  After the final decision to end the shutdown, the Park Service removed the barricades yesterday morning at both Afterbay and 3 Mile access points.

And the fishing?  It has been pretty awesome.  Increased flows the past week have set up new hiding spots for trout.  We are still seeing great Black Caddis fishing as well as Baetis making their main fall appearance.  Streamer fishing has been excellent with white being a hot color and yellow not too far behind.  Nymphing is always good and has been steady with Soft hackle rays (pink, grey 16-18), Epoxyback sowbugs (14-16), FB Pheasant tails (18-20), Black Quills (18-20), Tung Teasers (18-20)  and the list goes on.

Another great morning on the Bighorn.

Any word (or predictions) on lake turnover and its effect on the fishing? We are thinking of making a trip over this weekend if the conditions are good.

The lake has turned over. The river is now green but fishing conditions are very good! sowbugs and worms are fishing really well. Drop a caddis pupa or bwo nymph below. Still eating both of these hatches on top.

      Streamers can’t get much better
