Up it goes! Flows are projected to bump to 6,000 cfs today to offset projected runoff. Is this a lot of water in the Bighorn? Not really. We like the extra water and the fish seem to like it as well. The wading will be a bit more limited but plenty of opportunity still left out there. Hopefully we will be able to sustain these flows for a while as spring slips in.
Nymphing has still been the way to go. Water temps have dropped to the lowest they get all year, so concentrate on slower, deeper water. Again, once you find them, don’t leave! Typical sowbug/scud fare and various midge patterns have all been working well. (SH Sows, Rays (tan, grey 16-18), Firebead Rays, Zebra Midge, Cream Midge Larva. Definitely increase your weight of your rig with the increased flows as well.
Dry fly fishing has been a bit hit and miss with the rising flows. Wind has been our main obstacle lately, so watch the weather! We will let you know when it’s good.
Winter rates still in effect here at the Bighorn Angler. Discounts on rooms, boats, guides..
We’re open everyday and don’t forget to get your 2017 Montana Fishing License!
