With another arctic cold front lingering over us all week it is back to vise, the river will have to wait. Dave’s recent post about the pale morning dun hatch information got me excited about what we hope will be another phenomenal pmd hatch on the Bighorn River.
I decided to tie up a batch of one of my favorite patterns the PMD Hairwing Emerger. This pattern was originally shown to me by Nick Pionessa of the Oak Orchard Fly Shop, and is an adaptation of Rene Harrop’s original hairwing dun. The difference with this fly is that it is tied to represent an emerger, not the dun. In order to achieve that Nick added a trailing shuck, made the wing shorter and tied it on a curved shank hook.
This is an excellent pattern for all of the mayfly hatches present in Montana, just change the color palette of the fly. For a detailed fly tying tutorial by Nick Pionessa visit the link below:
