Couldn’t be better for December on the Bighorn. Fishing is good and the weather has been outstanding. It’s no longer the quiet winter season on the Bighorn with these conditions. Weekends have been pretty busy, so if you can get here on the weekdays, even better.
The majority of fish are in full spawn mode so they have shifted out of many of the main runs. We see many people walking all over the redds in several spots on the upper 3 and that just isn’t cool. Please be aware of where these fish are doing their thing.
As far as fishing goes, streamers are still going strong with Olive, Black and Yellow/brown combinations being the top picks. Sink tips are a must right now and fish the slower deeper runs for sure.
A handful of BWO’s are still around on the upper 3 providing for some pretty solid dry fly fishing in the afternoons, if it’s not blowing. Lots of midges in the evenings are keeping the fish looking up as well.
On the nymphing side, stick to Orange scuds, Pink and Tan Ray Charles (16-18), Black Quills, LBF’s, Pink or orange SH Sowbugs. Standard winter fare, adjust your weight and so on and so on..
The post Christmas lodging is filling up, so call us to book soon if you need rooms for our off season rates!
