The Ray Charles in unquestionably the most popular fly pattern for fly fishing the Bighorn River. The Soft Hackle Ray Charles is a highly effective version of the original. The Ray Charles Soft Hackle adds a wire rib and hen hackle as a collar. At times the soft hackle version seems to out fish the old standby. I really like to fish the Soft Hackle Ray Charles in larger versions such as 12’s and 14’s in addition to the standard sizes 16 – 20. I feel that the silhouette of the soft hackle version not only represents a sowbug but a scud effectively as well. I like to tie the soft hackle ray in orange and pink because of this fact along with the standard grey and tan colors.
