Wow, it has been quite a winter. Lots of snow still on the ground and way more in the mountains. Very quiet here on the river, but expect that to change with the string of good weather ahead.
We are getting lots of calls everyday asking about the future of water flows on the Bighorn, and more specifically this Spring. Of course we can’t be exact with the answer, but things are looking better than last season. The winter flows are near 5k and Bighorn Lake has been drawn down to make room for the incoming high water. We’ll see how much and how long it takes to come down. There’s no more snow in the foreseeable future, but it is Montana…
The fishing continues to stay pretty consistent. Nymphs and streamers are the go to although there are more and more fish up on dries each week.
Firebead Rays, Softhackles, Cotton Candys, and any sowbug type patterns are working great right now. Small zebras and larva patterns are working well as trailer bugs.
White has been the color as far as streamers are concerned. Black and Olive are a second good bet. Lots of fish in the slower flats, so spend more of your time there. Sink tips are a good idea until water temps warm up.
We are getting our new bugs and gear in daily, so come check out the shop for the hottest new gear!
