The Bighorn has finally cleared and fishing is great!  A few folks around, but not too bad.  Our Bighorn Brown Trout are in full spawn mode so please stay off the redds!

Nymphing with BIG Sowbugs, Squirmies and Orange Scuds are still about all you need.

We’ve seen some BIG fish showing up to chase the streamerRead more...

Things are starting to look up on the Bighorn.  Water clarity has increased dramatically over the past 5 or 6 days.  There is some grass in the system, but not like it was a couple weeks ago.  Fishing seems to be picking up as well!

This is the time the Bighorn if you’re a streamer junkieRead more...

There is still some good fishing to be had on the Bighorn.  We knew this long spell of amazing fishing couldn’t last all year, so here it is –  Bighorn Lake has started to turn over resulting in ‘green’ conditions throughout the Bighorn.  It’s held off a lot longer than we thought, but it’s here and will be here until the nights really start cooling off.  Read more...

After the massive deluge the states of Montana and Wyoming received this past week, we are seeing the results on our end.  Flows will be on the rise daily and finally at 3750 CFS by Friday afternoon. There’s a really good chance for even higher flows in the near future.  Expect the river to be carrying some ‘salad’ down its entirety throughout the week, but this should also help clean it out a bit.  Read more...

We lost another Bighorn legend yesterday.  Brad Downey was a well known guide on the Bighorn and just a great guy!  We wish his family peace and hope Brad is enjoying some margaritas with the fishing gods!

In honor of Brad, I am featuring the Wondernymph this week.  This is a must have Baetis pattern and is a very cool and unique pattern overall.  Read more...

We consider Mid March – May as ‘Spring’ on the Bighorn.  The river behaves a lot different than the Summer months.  Water temps are cooler, days are a bit shorter and often times we deal with colder weather.  To be a successful angler, sometimes you must break the rules and old habits. Pat Schelle is one of our most valuable assets to our business and provides many of the custom patterns that fill our bins and put Bighorn trout in our nets.  Here is a cool article Big Sky Journal did back in 2009 about Pat and his famous pattern, the LBF.  If you haven’t fished this pattern yet, you need to! The Bureau of Reclamation has recently released the first installment of the snow and moisture forecast for the Bighorn watershed.  You can read it HERE.  It’s looking good for now, but we all know how that’s gone in the past…  Right now we’re on the right track for lower Spring flows, as long as we don’t have some catastrophic snow event, which we have to remember, it is Montana and there is a lot of winter left!
