Bighorn River Fishing Report 9/11

We are seeing a noticeable weather change move into the area, bringing cooler temperatures that might slow down the caddis activity a bit. But as any seasoned Bighorn angler knows, a shift in the weather usually brings its own kind of reward. With the cooler conditions settling in, streamer fishing is poised to pick up, and the nymph bite remains as reliable as ever.
Flows have also bumped up around 1850 cfs, giving the river a few more spots for fish to slide into. September is still tracking to be an exceptional month to fish here, especially as these seasonal shifts get the trout fired up.
THE DETAILS:
  • Nymphing: The morning and all-day subsurface bite continues to be strong. Stick with your trusted confidence patterns like Orange Scuds, Tailwater Sowbugs, and Carpet Bugs early on, and drop a Poodle Sniffer, Blowtorch, Frenchie, or Pheasant Tail off the back as the day progresses.
  • Streamers: With the cooler weather and bumped-up flows, tie on your favorite articulated patterns or traditional meat and start swinging or stripping the banks and deeper runs.  We like Goldies, Rusty Trombones, Pete’s Bugger, Lil Kims and Jig Thin Mints.
