Bighorn River Fishing Report 7/16

Flows have dropped to 2000 cfs as of 2 days ago. Water clarity remains excellent throughout most of the river, though anglers should be aware that there’s still a significant amount of moss present in the lower sections.  Keep your bugs clean and they’ll eat!!

The PMD’s just started, though some inclement weather over the past couple days has kept the surface activity subdued. Fish have been feeding heavily on PMD nymphs during this period, and the action should continue to improve as conditions stabilize.  We’re seeing some black Caddis below Bighorn and expect those to start showing up on the upper river as well. Any day now….

The nymph bite is getting better and better each day.  The most effective nymph patterns right now include Frenchies, Carpet Bugs, Split Case PMD nymphs, and Tailwater Sowbugs.  The amount of big Sowbugs and PMD’s in the drift right now is impressive!
