It’s a New Year on the Bighorn

Happy New Year from the Bighorn Angler crew!  Things are pretty quiet around here right now.  A few brave souls out there in the cold catching fish and shooting birds.  Both of which have been pretty good!

The river has lost its green tinge from the fall and most all the floating grass is gone.  It’s very clean fishing right now!  Still some fish on the redds, but we will soon see them peeling off and returning to the depths of the main runs.  Water temps have dipped quite a bit into the lower 40’s, although that is pretty warm for this Montana winter.

Nymphs and Streamers continue to dominate.  Any Sowbug with a firebead, SH Rays, Zebras will all work well from now on out.  Small streamers (buggers, zonkers) on tips are your best bet.  Stick with the slow deep flats for the most chases.   We even saw some pretty decent pods of fish on midges yesterday in the 5 degree weather.  They don’t seem to mind.

We are starting the show circuit this weekend with the Denver Fly Fishing Show, so stop by the booth if you’re in the area.  Don’t forget we are still offering winter rates on lodging, boat rentals and guide trips.  We are open daily, so give us a shout!
