Bighorn River Fishing Report 6/19

The Bighorn River in Montana is currently fishing with consistent, stabilized conditions. Flows are hovering around 1,500 CFS, a level that is expected to hold steady for the foreseeable future. With the BOR maintaining stable releases, water clarity is excellent, but there is a bit of drifting moss below 3 Mile.  It is ‘Moss Month’ afterall!

For the nymph angler,  You’ll want to have your boxes stocked with Bighorn staples, including Tailwater sowbugs, carpet bugs, and Zebra midges. Additionally, orange scuds and various Baetis-style perdigons are proving effective. While the nymph bite is the primary draw at the moment, keep a close watch —hopper fishing is just around the corner as summer terrestrial activity begins to ramp up.

Patience will be key for those seeking dry fly action, as the iconic Pale Morning Dun (PMD) and caddis hatches are still roughly a month away from their peak..  Might be a bit earlier this Summer, but we’ll keep you posted!
