Bighorn River Fishing Report 5/6

Bighorn River Spring Report: Low Water & Technical Nymphing

The spring transition is officially underway on the Bighorn River. While the first Baetis of the season are starting to show, rising fish are still rare, so keep your dry fly expectations tempered for now.  It’s about to happen!

Nymphing remains the most productive method for finding consistent action in these tailwater conditions. Effective patterns currently include Tailwater Sowbugs, Carpet Bugs, Silver Bullets, Zebra Midges, orange scuds, and LBF’s.

Anglers should also take note that the rainbows are in full spawn, making it vital to be mindful of spawning beds. Please avoid stepping on redds to protect the next generation of trout.

With conditions pointing toward a low-water spring, wading access is excellent across both the upper and lower stretches.
