Bighorn River Fishing Report 8/27

Flows have bumped up just a bit to 1,600 cfs, and combined with the seasonal grass growth along the banks, the river is fishing with a bit more depth and character right now. Conditions are setting up nicely, and the late-summer rhythm on the Bighorn is in full swing.
Bug activity remains pretty robust across the system. We are still seeing good numbers of both black and tan caddis, alongside a steady showing of PMDs keeping the trout looking up and active in the water column.
What’s Working
  • Morning Nymphing: The early bite has been exceptionally strong. Start your day with proven producers like Orange Scuds, Tailwater Sowbugs, or Carpet Bugs to match the morning food sources.
  • Afternoon Transitions: As the day heats up and the caddis and PMD activity takes over, switch to a trailing rig. Drop a Poodle Sniffer, a Blowtorch, a Frenchie, or a Pheasant Tail off the back of your lead fly to pick up the active fish.
The river is fishing great, the water is healthy, and it’s a fantastic time to be on the Bighorn. Swing by the shop to stock up on your caddis and nymph selections, and we’ll see you out there!
