Bighorn River Fishing Update 5/24
Fishing has been great lately on the Bighorn. Flows are currently down to around 3100 CFS and the river remains very clear. We’re starting to see some moss below 3 Mile, but not bad yet. Water temps are bumping just a bit and we’re seeing fish moving into some of the faster shelves. It’s been very busy out there, so please be courteous of other anglers!
Rainbows are in full spawn mode, so please let them do their thing. There are plenty of other hungry fish out there.
Subsurface we are doing well on Pink and Red beaded Sowbugs (Carpet Bugs, Rays, Jellybeans). In the afternoons, the Baetis are still strong, so drop on a small perdigon or quill style bug and you’ll be into fish.
We’re still seeing some good dry fly activity in the afternoons. They’re getting smart, so a good presentation is a must. Small CDC patterns like the Student, CDC Sparkle Duns and Baetis Spinners should be in your arsenal.
