Bighorn River Fishing update July 11

Big Bows’ are the name of the game this Summer!

Flows have been up and down on the Bighorn, and at this point, we are looking at the later.  The river is scheduled to be at 2500 CFS by the next couple of days and should stay at that level throughout the remainder of the Summer season.

The good news is the fishing has been really good!  We don’t have a ton of bugs out yet, but it should happen any day.  Underneath the fish are definitely dialed into Sowbugs and a few smaller random bugs (Midges/Baetis), but for the most part, keep it simple and fish a double Sow rig.  Carpet Bugs, Eddie Vedders and Rays are all great choices.  Smaller (16-18) has been better lately.  You’ll pick up a few fish on PMD and Caddis patterns, which is a good sign for things to come.

Just as expected, hoppers have made a big appearance on the Bighorn and the fish are starting to look for them.  Pink, Tan or Gold foamies are a wise choice to have in your arsenal.  We’re seeing them anywhere in sizes 6-14.   This is going to be another awesome hopper summer!
