Bighorn River Report – January 21

Finally, a nice break in the weather!

Fishing is still good for many sticking to the typical winter runs.  Pink has been the color of choice for nymphs so make sure you have plenty of Cotton Candys, Jellybeans and Pink Softhackle Sowbugs.  Dropping a black Zebra, Red Midge Larva or any other small dark midge off the back end will be good as well.  Read more...

BOR Releases 2020 Snowmelt forecast for Bighorn Drainage

The Bureau of Reclamation has recently released the first installment of the snow and moisture forecast for the Bighorn watershed.  You can read it HERE.  It’s looking good for now, but we all know how that’s gone in the past…  Right now we’re on the right track for lower Spring flows, as long as we don’t have some catastrophic snow event, which we have to remember, it is Montana and there is a lot of winter left! A New Year on the Bighorn River

Happy New Year from the Bighorn Angler!  We’re looking forward to 2020 to being a better year as the fish and fishery are in great shape. The fishing has been as good as it gets for winter fishing!  As long as I don’t break my ankle or something else this year, I’ll call it a success! Read more...

Mid December Bighorn River Fishing Report

Shifting into winter mode here on the Bighorn.  The browns have just about wrapped up their spawn for the year.  We saw good numbers of fish on the redds this Fall, but not quite like the good ol’ days.  The positive side is that there were some BIG fish seen.  Angler numbers have dropped off significantly as most folks are chasing Roosters or waterfowl.   Read more...

Post Thanksgiving Bighorn River Update

We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend!  Those who came out to the Bighorn valley were rewarded with some solid fishing and hunting (at least we took advantage of it!).  Back into the 40’s this next week and should be a great time to get out and fish.

Strong numbers of Baetis are still around throughout most of the river.   Read more...

Mid November Bighorn River Fishing Update

It appears as fall is hanging around finally.  We have a span of great weather ahead of us and people are finally coming back out to experience some great fishing the Bighorn has to offer.

The Baetis have been going strong and consistent for about 2 weeks now.  Expect to see some noses poking up around 1:00 or so and fish will be up until around 4:00.   Read more...

Fall Baetis on the Bighorn

After this past cold front we have, the Bighorn trout have awaken and started looking up for the arrival of the Fall Baetis.  The cloudy calm afternoons have been very productive and the fish are up.  Don’t expect to see pods like we are used to of past years, but quite a few solo fish gorging on the big duns. Late October Bighorn River Report

We’re nearing the end of a great, but interesting season on the Bighorn and getting prepared for some excellent late Fall/early Winter fishing.  Overall, it’s a ghost town out there most days but the fish are very willing to EAT!

Nymphing has really picked up and now is a good time to start sticking some of those big fish we have in the river this year as they are in peak shape.   Read more...
