The Bighorn has finally cleared and fishing is great!  A few folks around, but not too bad.  Our Bighorn Brown Trout are in full spawn mode so please stay off the redds!

A little delay in fishing reports, but nothing too exciting and new to report.  The river is in prime shape as far as clarity and lack of vegetation.  We don’t often get long warm weather windows like this and surprised it hasn’t been busier than it is.  A handful of guys out there trying to shoot end of the season ducks, but not a whole lot of fishing pressure right now. The Bureau of Reclamation has recently released the first installment of the snow and moisture forecast for the Bighorn watershed.  You can read it HERE.  It’s looking good for now, but we all know how that’s gone in the past…  Right now we’re on the right track for lower Spring flows, as long as we don’t have some catastrophic snow event, which we have to remember, it is Montana and there is a lot of winter left! We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend!  Those who came out to the Bighorn valley were rewarded with some solid fishing and hunting (at least we took advantage of it!).  Back into the 40’s this next week and should be a great time to get out and fish.

After this past cold front we have, the Bighorn trout have awaken and started looking up for the arrival of the Fall Baetis.  The cloudy calm afternoons have been very productive and the fish are up.  Don’t expect to see pods like we are used to of past years, but quite a few solo fish gorging on the big duns. The Bighorn trout continue to eat, despite the slightly off colored water and grass!  The crowds have thinned out for the season and Fall weather is on the way.

Flows are down, fish are up, and mid-summer fishing is in full swing.  First week of August is in the books and it’s brought lots of smiles to our guides and dry fly crowds.  The river isn’t packed side to side, top to bottom with rising fish all day, but they are where they should be and really good at times.  Read more...
