Dry fly season is on!  The Bighorn continues to kick out impressive hatches of PMD’s and Black Caddis daily.  Fishing has been great in all aspects (Nymphing, Dry fly, some streamers).  Definitely a few people around, but the fish don’t seem to mind.

If you’re looking to hunt heads, plan on being on the water by about 11 and stay until dark.  Read more...

Conditions on the Bighorn are prime right now for Summer fishing.  PMD’s are still the main event and they are as thick as can be on most days.  It’s a bit busier out there, but with the whole river fishing well, you can pick fish out of many spots.

If you’re looking to hunt fish on the surface, plan on about 1 PM till dark.  Read more...

The flow on the Bighorn has settled in at 4000 CFS.  The fish seem to be pretty happy about it and overall the fishing has really picked up.

We lost another Bighorn legend yesterday.  Brad Downey was a well known guide on the Bighorn and just a great guy!  We wish his family peace and hope Brad is enjoying some margaritas with the fishing gods!

In honor of Brad, I am featuring the Wondernymph this week.  This is a must have Baetis pattern and is a very cool and unique pattern overall.  Read more...

We consider Mid March – May as ‘Spring’ on the Bighorn.  The river behaves a lot different than the Summer months.  Water temps are cooler, days are a bit shorter and often times we deal with colder weather.  To be a successful angler, sometimes you must break the rules and old habits. The Cotton Candy has become a Bighorn Guides’ favorite Sowbug pattern for the past few years.  It’s a fairly simple pattern to tie and holds up great.  It’s definitely a ‘Must Have’ pattern for the Spring the Bighorn.  If you don’t like tying them, you can order them straight from us HERE. It looks like COVID-19 regulations have caught up to us in the Bighorn Valley.  As of 5 PM yesterday, March 20th, all lodges and accommodations have been asked to close down for at least a week and then a reevaluation will take place.  Luckily no cases, yet, in our region.  Our retail fly shop will remain open most every morning for shuttles, flies and supplies.   Read more...
