PMD madness continues on the Bighorn.  If you want to see the Bighorn in its prime dry fly glory, this is the time.  From about noon till dark, you will be able to find consistent heads up and plenty of bugs.  We’re seeing a handful of Caddis, especially below 3 Mile.  Read more...

It’s finally happening out here!  Great hatches of PMD’s, Black Caddis and even a few Tan Caddis are going on right now.  If you like ‘techy’ dry fly fishing for big fish, this is the time to be here!  Early afternoon – Dark will have plenty of targets up to fish to. Read more...

It’s real close to go time folks!  Increasing numbers of PMD’s and Caddis in the early afternoon signal it could break loose any day now.  Water temps are in the mid 40’s early in the morning and approaching low 50’s throughout much of the lower end of the river.  There are no closures or ‘Hoot Owl’ restrictions on the Bighorn right now! It’s almost there folks!  Water temps appear to be warming up just a bit more (high 40’s/low 50’s) as July keeps plugging along.  We’re seeing fish starting to move up into some of the faster shelves and more of an abundance of PMD nymphs.  There are a handful of PMD adults around and a good number of large Baetis as well.  Read more...

We’re getting closer, but water temps need to come up just a bit.  Flows are still stable at 1750-1800 CFS and the river remains Gin clear with some drifting vegetables below 3 Mile.  Keep your flies clean and the fish will eat them!

Things are heading in the right direction on the Bighorn.  The majority of rainbows have moved off their redds and back into the main runs making for plenty of shots at big fish.  River clarity is superb and water temps are still in the mid 40’s, but we are still having to fish through some moss, especially below 3 Mile. Cold and low flows are still the name of the game on the Bighorn.  It looks like we’ll be sitting at the 1750 CFS mark for quite some time.  The good news is our river is staying clear and water temps in the mid 40’s.  Still a fair amount of moss below 3 Mile, so keep your bugs clean! Read more...

We’ve got a little break in the action from the busy Spring crowds.  Still a few folks around, but fishing has been up and down.  It’s transition time on the Bighorn, which means fizzling out Spring hatches, rainbows finishing up the spawn and getting ready for the awesome Summer ahead of us.  Read more...

Summer got here quick!  Temps up in the mid 90’s this week should make things interesting…  Despite the weather, the Bighorn remains cold, clear and low.  We’re seeing a fair amount of drifting moss below 3 Mile, making for some tricky fishing down there, but if you keep your bugs clean, they’ll eat (that’s the theory at least).  Read more...

Well, it looks like our dismal snowpack has caught up to us.  As of 4 PM yesterday, Bighorn River flows are down at 1980 CFS.  Low incoming flows to Bighorn Lake and no snow are the root of this.  I can safely say we will NOT have high water this season.  Read more...
